History & Vision
history of ccgj
Calvary Chapel Grand Junction was formed and founded in 1989 as a home fellowship by Pastor Jeff Johnson and his wife, Elizabeth. Our first Sunday Service was in the cafeteria of Pomona Elementary School in November of 1989. We began renting out a section of our current location in 1993. Eventually, we bought the entire building in 2009 and began expanding in 2010. By 2015, we were able to occupy the entire facility and in 2025, we were blessed to pay off our mortgage!
Through the years, we have kept our focus on Jesus Christ as He is revealed to us through the Word of God, which is Genesis through Revelation, in its entirety. This is why our theme verse throughout the years has been Romans 10:17: “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God.”
Our hope and prayer is that all who attend Calvary Chapel Grand Junction will be blessed and strengthened in their faith and trust in Jesus Christ as Lord, and they would grow in their love for their brothers and sisters in Christ, and they would have a desire to share the love of God, by sharing the gospel message of Christ with those who need forgiveness and Salvation.

Our Vision
-
Teaching the whole counsel of God’s Word:
The Bible alone is the inspired, infallible Word of God. It is relevant and alive and applicable to our lives today. Therefore, our services are designed with great emphasis on teaching through God’s Word. This is how we come to know God and worship Him and learn to serve Him.
“All scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.” II Timothy 3:16-17 -
Seeing Christians grow and mature in their faith: a personal, saving relationship with God through Jesus Christ, radically transforms our lives. Through God’s Word, and the empowering ministry of the Holy Spirit, Jesus enables us to live healthy, God-honoring, productive and fruitful lives. Jesus said, “I have come that they may have life, and that they have it more abundantly.” John 10:10
Therefore, our hope and desire is to worship the Lord in Spirit and truth, to seek Him in prayer, and rejoice in the new life He has given us. And as a result, we desire to equip the body of Christ to become mature and fruitful disciples of Jesus. We desire to see marriages and families strengthened and functioning as God intended. And through our children’s ministry and youth groups, we hope and pray that the next generation will be strong in their relationship with Jesus, and make Him known to others.

Proclaiming the Gospel of Christ Near and Far:
We believe that reaching “the lost” with the gospel of Jesus Christ is our mission. And that mission is essential for a healthy church. Therefore, we look for opportunities to proclaim Christ’s message locally and on mission trips, and by partnering with like-minded mission groups and organizations. Jesus said in Mark 16:15, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.”
Jesus gave us the pattern to follow when He said in Acts 1:8, “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Min in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and the end of the earth.”
For us at Calvary Chapel, Grand Junction is our Jerusalem, Colorado is our Judea, the United States is our Samaria and being involved in foreign lands is the end of the earth.
A Message from Pastor Jeff
Thank you for visiting Calvary Chapel Junction’s website today! As you can see, we are a fellowship of believers that holds to the K.I.S.S. philosophy of ministry. “Keep It Simple, Saints!” We live in an increasingly challenging and changing society. As a nation, we are witnessing the destructive and often deadly effects of illegal drug use in every area of our culture. Abortion is still a major blight upon our society. The ever present threat of terrorism looms over our heads. Many questions & concerns persist about the future of our economy & environment. We are politically divided. Job security sounds more like an oxymoron than a reality. In the church today, we are bombarded with a plethora of “new and improved” ways of “doing church” and an increasing presence of false teachings & quick fix philosophies.
Although this can all seem so overwhelming, isn’t it so good to know in this ever-changing, increasingly hectic world that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever? (Heb 13:8) Here at CCGJ, Jesus is the Rock upon which we build our lives—how reassuring in this unstable “doom and gloom” and “what if?” mind-set oriented society. Jesus is still our shelter when the enemy is on the attack. He still calms our hearts and minds during the most traumatic storms that come our way (Matt 8:26). Jesus is still the Good Shepherd who feeds His flock and gathers the lambs in His arm and carries us close to His heart and gently leads those who are with young (Isaiah 40:11). He still preaches the gospel to the poor, heals the broken hearted, proclaims liberty to the captives, opens the eyes of the blind and sets at liberty those who are oppressed by the enemy (Luke 4:18). Those who have experienced the life changing power of Jesus Christ within our hearts and minds know these things to be true.
As Calvary Chapel founder and Pastor Chuck Smith often teaches, “The Holy Spirit of God takes the Word of God and transforms the people of God.” I believe that with all my heart. God created us for fellowship and He wants to have a personal relationship with each and every one of us. He provided everything we need for life and godliness and fellowship with Him and each other. It is all wrapped up in Jesus Christ, who willingly left His glorious position with God the Father and came down into this sin-filled world with the sole purpose of being the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. Jesus went to the cross as the Perfect Sacrifice and as the Perfect Substitute for all our sins. He paid the only acceptable price to redeem our sinful souls; His spotless blood. And so, because Jesus died for us, rose from the grave three days later, is alive forevermore, is seated at the right hand of the Father and has poured out His Holy Spirit upon us, He alone can give us all that we need—everlasting, never ending life. He alone can give us power and victory, meaning and purpose for everyday life! He alone can deliver us from our past sins, failures and disappointments and even from the pain and suffering others may have caused us. He alone has prepared a beautiful and glorious future for His bride, the church.
Here at Calvary Chapel Grand Junction, “It’s all about Jesus”! Our desire is for you to know Him as your Lord and Savior and then to grow in your relationship with Him & one another. The more we grow, the more we realize just how awesome He really is. He has done everything to rescue us and to bring us into His family. By His grace He has saved us and by His strength He upholds us, and because of His unconditional love for us we humble ourselves before His throne and
worship Him, for He alone is worthy to receive glory, honor, and praise.
As we grow in Christ, we begin to see the world around us a little more the way Jesus sees it—as lost
sheep without the Chief Shepherd; as injured, unhealthy people who need the Great Physician; as
sinners who need the love and forgiveness of the Savior…
And so, we invite you to come and grow with us, as we grow with Jesus! “Therefore we also, since we
are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight and the sin which so
easily ensnares us…” (Heb. 12:1-2.)
May the Lord bless you as you continually walk with Him. In His love and mine,
Pastor Jeff
